Last year on July 1, a state policy prohibited smoking in university buildings with the rare exception of specified areas in the residential halls. The smoking policy was then addressed again on January 1. The new law banned smoking in all buildings owned, occupied or leased by the state; this included resident halls.

Bourbon Street bar scuffle ends with blood, cops

A night downtown ended in bloody noses for a few and a cut in the abdomen for one early Wednesday.

A fight ensued at Bourbon Street bar on Broad Street when someone accused a male student of bumping into a girl, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

The meeting included details about current activities the force is implementing in response to the issue of larceny across the campus. In attendance were Director Marlene Hall, Lieutenant Rodger Hughes and Major M.C. Keith.

A small wooden stool sits behind the counter of the newly opened The Morris Book Shop on Southland Drive.

It's been over thirty years since a Morris Book Shop has been open in Lexington and little remains of the old bookstore once located downtown. But the small wooden stool, a remainder of what once was, is a remnant of the shop that Wyn Morris and Hap Houlihan named their small store after.

Two incoming freshmen, arrested for alcohol-related offenses within a week of each other in June, have different plans for the fall semester.

One will be in Athens, and one will not.

Tyler Porter Biringer, an incoming freshman from Roswell, was arrested and charged with underage possession of alcohol and open container June 7, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

Beshear appoints alumni to UK Board

Gov. Steve Beshear appointed two UK alumni to positions on the UK Board of Trustees, replacing two members whose terms have expired.

For Britt Brockman, a Louisville eye surgeon and alumnus of the UK College of Pharmacy, being a member of the board is "an honor he gets to experience a second time around.

Jay Blanton, head of UK public relations, announced late last week that he is leaving UK to become communications director for Gov. Steve Beshear.

Blanton, 40, said his departure is something he has been considering since before Beshear was elected in November.
