It has become harder for students to imagine themselves completely safe on their college campuses because of the recent school shootings across the country. The one-year anniversary of the shooting at Virginia Tech is at hand and images of the Northern Illinois shooting still fresh in our minds, students everywhere are constantly wondering how to feel safer on campus.
The Upper East Tennessee Science Fair will be held April 24, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Culp Center ballroom. Sponsored by ETSU and the Johnson City Kiwanis Club, the event features approximately 350 exhibits submitted by fourth through eighth grade students from over 40 schools in Northeast Tennessee, as well as home-schooled students in the Northeast Tennessee Home Educators Association, which includes several from Southwest Virginia.
The ETSU Alumni Association will host its annual ring ceremony at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the ETSU Foundation Carillon and Alumni Plaza with President Paul Stanton. Other university and alumni officials will be on hand to present the University's rings to students participating in the campus tradition.
Counselors know that putting the pieces of college life together can be quite a challenge, therefore ETSU'S Counseling Center is offering to help students find exactly where those pieces fit. "Solving the Puzzle of Life," HDAL 2350, is a three-credit course offered each semester.
Bluegrass, Old-Time Music and Country Music students will have a new recording lab to utilize in the Center for Appalachian Studies next semester thanks to proceeds from the East Tennessee State Student access fee. While the lab is a new addition to the program, it has been a long time in the making, Director of Appalachian Studies Roberta Herrin said.
The East Tennessee State University Arboretum staff is looking for volunteers to assist with a Flowering Tree Evaluation. No special knowledge is required - just a love of trees and gardens. With grant support from the Harris Fund for Washington County, the ETSU Arboretum planted many unusual trees throughout the ETSU campus during 2003-2004.
Carrie Underwood's recent campus performance has some students asking, "Why her and why so much?" The American Idol winner's production, which attracted a record ETSU audience of 8,000 at the Mini Dome, also attracted attention to the SGA selection process for contracting entertainers.
