Column Additions

Issue date: 2/8/07 Section: Letters to Editor

Dear Editor,
This letter is in response to Summer Carr's "The Whole Enchilada" advice column from Jan. 25, 2007.
That column deals with Ms. Carr's response to "Regretful," who is worried about getting into graduate school due to a shaky first couple of years as an undergraduate.
Carr offers some well-founded words of encouragement; a strong last couple of years mean more than a weak first couple. Don't assume graduate school is out of reach.
I'm submitting this, however, for the purposes of:
1. Reminding the students that ETSU offers a diverse selection of graduate degree programs, a point Carr failed to mention in her column. Go to www.etsu.edu/gradstud/ and take a look at the program offerings, or come to the Graduate School office in Dossett Hall (309) and pick up some information.
2. Emphasizing that application deadlines vary by program at ETSU and other schools. Carr states that most schools have a March deadline for fall semester. My advice is to check deadlines carefully-the majority of ETSU's graduate programs have a preferred application deadline of June 1 for fall semester, although several have earlier deadlines (in certain programs as early as Feb. 1).
3. Adding additional Web sites to check out for information about different graduate schools. Ms. Carr mentions www.princetonreview.com. I recommend www.gradschools.com, and am throwing in www.gradsource.com as well.
4. Offering a word of caution regarding signing up to take entrance exams "ASAP," as Carr advises. Just as with application deadlines, standardized tests such as the GRE or GMAT are required for admittance into some, but not all, graduate programs. Check to see if such a test is required before you put in the time and expense of taking it. Also, make sure you take the appropriate test if one is required.
