Harold Ford Jr. to speak at Social Work Career Day

East Tennessee State University's Department of Social Work and the National Association of Social Workers Tennessee Chapter will hold a Career Day in recognition of National Social Work Month. The event will be held Wednesday, March 21, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center.
From 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., a Career Fair will be in progress. Representatives from various agencies and organizations will be available to talk with social work students.
Harold E. Ford Jr., former member of the United States House of Representatives and a 2006 candidate for the U.S. Senate, will deliver the keynote address at 1 p.m. Elected in 1996 to Tennessee's 9th congressional district, Ford was re-elected four times by an average of 80 percent of the vote.
Known as a consensus builder, he served on the House Budget Committee, the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
Ford was a featured speaker at the 2000 Democratic National Convention and is a frequent television guest commentator.
He is also a visiting professor of public policy at Vanderbilt University, where he teaches a class on American political leadership.
Other speakers include J.P. Burnham, assistant professor in the ETSU Department of Social Work, presenting "Panic or Plan: Social Work and Pandemic Preparedness" at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., "Ethical Decision Making" will be the topic addressed by Rev. Carl Petering, the retired director of Pastoral Care at Mountain States Health Alliance who now serves as an adjunct faculty member in the ETSU College of Nursing and at Emmanuel School of Religion.
Dr. Daphne Henderson, an ETSU assistant professor of social work, will offer an ethics workshop focused on "Dual Relationships: Expect the Unexpected" from 2-5 p.m.
