Constitution Day program scheduled for Sept. 16

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, East Tennessee State University will observe Constitution Day by hosting a special event, entitled "The Candidate, The Election, The Vote."
The free, public program, held from 6-8 p.m. in Room 118 of Rogers-Stout Hall, will look at the processes involved in running as a candidate for public office.
A local successful office holder, the treasurers of the Phil Roe and Rob Russell campaigns for Congress, the regional president of the League of Women Voters, a newspaper editor, and two ETSU faculty members will comprise the panel, which includes: Dr. Elwood Watson, ETSU professor of History and panel moderator;Tracey Alice Berry, treasurer, Rob Russell for Congress campaign; Dr. Daryl Carter, ETSU assistant professor of History and African American Studies; Robert Houk, opinion page editor for the Johnson City Press; Linda Modica, president, Northeast Tennessee chapter of the League of Women Voters; Jane Myron, vice mayor of Johnson City; John Teague, finance manager, Phil Roe for Congress campaign.
Constitution Day and Citizenship Day was established as a federal holiday in 2004 to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787, and to recognize persons who have become citizens due to either coming of age or naturalization.
The act also mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions provide programming pertaining to the history of the American Constitution.
