The ETSU men's soccer team shutout High Point Saturday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium, 2-0.
"First and foremost our team continues to get better and better," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "In this game I think we saw an ETSU team that passed well and controled the game. That is very encouraging for us."
Both team had scoring opportunities in the first half, but neither team would get on the board in the half as the ETSU defense did not allowed a first-half goal for the third straight match.
The Bucs (4-2) took the lead in the 56th minute as Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) headed the cross from Nathaniel McElroy (Knoxville, Tenn.) past the High Point keeper into the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Tyler Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
"Hoek's goal was our best goal of the year," Calabrese said. "We are starting to get a lot more dangerous in the front and I am happy to see us playing this well."
The Panthers put pressure on ETSU late in the match, but in the 89th minute Andrew Brown (Montego Bay, Jamaica) put the game out of reach as he collected a clearance and fired a shot from 40 yards out over the retreating High Point keeper and into the goal to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.
Defensively freshman James Holt (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led the Bucs with five saves as he earned his third shutout and fourth win of the season.
The Bucs are back in action on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. as they head to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on seventh ranked North Carolina. Visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU men's soccer or any other Buccaneer athletic team.
