The East Tennessee State University campus environmental group, Initiative for Clean Energy (ICE), will soon travel to Washington, D.C., where they will join young leaders from across the country for Power Shift '09.
The Power Shift '09 summit begins Friday, Feb. 27, with a press conference and will culminate on Monday, March 2, with a day of action, when thousands of youth will converge on the halls of Congress to lobby their representatives.
Power Shift participants will encourage President Barack Obama and Congress to pass a bold climate and energy policy that gives top priority to renewable energy, green job creation, and an aggressive cap on carbon emissions. The four-day historic national youth summit will also include seminars, panels and workshops; a green career fair; and legislative briefings in addition to activist training.
"ICE decided to get a group together to attend the summit because the civil disobedience demonstration is of great interest to all of us," said Lance Lewis, president of ICE. "We're ready for real change, and we want the new presidential administration and Congress to know it." Power Shift '09 is organized by the Energy Action Coalition, which has grown over the past four years to include 50 national organizations, over 700 local groups, and hundreds of thousands of young people all working together to promote clean energy solutions and the creation of a new green economy.
"We are at a critical point in our nation's history," said Jessy Tolkan, director of Power Shift and organizer of the Energy Action Coalition. "We have the chance to work with our new leadership to build a green economy and address our climate crisis with the passage of bold climate and energy policies. We won't allow this moment to pass us by."
