Issue date: 2/12/09 Section: Sports
Hugs and kisses will be replaced by hooks and jabs this Valentine's Day at East Tennessee State University, as the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will team up with the Johnson City Athletic Club to host the St. Valentine's Day Boxing Championships inside Brooks Gym.
Gates will open at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14, and the opening bell is set for 6:30.
Lee Morrow, chairman of the of JCAC advisory board and ETSU's head strength and conditioning coach, expects 18 fights on the card with boxing clubs from Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina scheduled to participate.
The schedule of fights is tentative at this time, but trainer Scott Vance hopes to have at least six members from the JCAC on the bout card. Morrow hopes the event will bring boxing fans to the Johnson City campus, while also introducing ETSU sports fans to amateur fighting.
He also said this event is an example of the city and university working together on a mutually beneficial event.
"We are excited about this new partnership between ETSU and the JCAC," Vance said. "Hopefully, we will see a lot of ETSU students come out in support of our local boxing team."
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for anyone 18 and under. ETSU students, faculty and staff pay $5 with IDs. For more information call (423) 232-6079.
Charles Watson will be in attendance signing autographs. Watson is ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Boxing at 140 pounds, and has been selected to compete with Team USA in Dublin, Ireland as part of the USA vs. Ireland Dual, Feb. 27 to March 2. He has over 150 bouts, winning 140 of them.
Watson also has plans to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.
