Discrimination
Issue date: 3/2/09 Section: Letters to Editor
Dear Editor,
I am the main advertiser for the student organization Atheist & Free Thought Club. I put flyers up to advertise the club about its current events. Every single time I do this, I come back to places I put the flyers up the next day and the majority of them are gone. Why? I'm not quite sure.
I've never torn any other club's fliers down. In fact, I've helped distribute fliers evenly on bulletin boards so everyone has a chance. You may think that putting up fliers isn't a lot of work, but walking around campus, going on every floor of most buildings can be quite tiring and time-consuming. Ripping down fliers is also a waste of paper because then I must replace all the ripped -down fliers and produce more when I run out. I'd just like to ask the people doing this, "What's your motive?" I don't understand what they mean to accomplish by doing these things. I'm discriminated against for being atheist and being assumed "evil" all the time, but I'm not the one STEALING someone else's fliers. I wish these people would have some respect for their fellow students and for diversity.

Way, way, back in the day, when I attended ETSU, various flyers of all kinds would get torn down or have humorous or insulting things written on them. (Continued…)

The Freethinkers Society's liers are sometimes ripped down at UT Martin, too.
Their motive is easy, it is to keep their fellow students from knowing the truth about religion. (Continued…)

Thanks, Rose, for sharing your story. Continue to speak up whenever this happens. Also, it's really comforting for me to learn that there are groups on campus that promote diversity in thought and beliefs. (Continued…)

Just a question, but are your fliers approved? You have to get them stamped by the culp center in order to post them on the boards. If they are, then that sucks. (Continued…)
