ETSU students honored with 'Who's Who' recognition

Nine East Tennessee State University students have been selected for inclusion in the most recent edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Since 1934, the publication has honored outstanding students who demonstrate “academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.” Those selected join representatives from “more than 2,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations.”

The ETSU students chosen are:

Suzi Azzazy of Johnson City is a senior majoring in biology. The secretary of the ETSU Student Government Association, she is vice president of Tri Beta Biology Honor Society and a member of the President’s Pride service honorary. She is the daughter of Sal and Laila Azzazy of Knoxville.

Ashley S. Bowser, a junior from Piney Flats, is majoring in both political science and criminal justice. The ETSU Student Government Association vice president, she serves as the membership chair for Sigma Kappa social sorority and is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society. She is the daughter of Vicky and Danny Williams of Piney Flats and Michael Bowser of Gray. Her grandparents are James and Mae Edwards and James Bowser, all of Gray.

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson, a native of Chattanooga and now a resident of Johnson City, is the student recipient of ETSU’s Patricia E. Robertson Diversity Leadership Award. A senior majoring in English and minoring in African and African American Studies, she is president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, chair of the ETSU Student Government Association Student Affairs Committee, a national coordinating committee member of the United Students Against Sweatshops, and a national council member of the Student Environmental Action Coalition. Her other affiliations include membership in Mountain Justice and the ETSU organizations Initiative for Clean Energy, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Progressive Student Alliance, LGBTies, Black Affairs Association, and the Race Relations Dialogue Taskforce. She is also a member of Chattanooga’s Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church. Her parents are Tamara Woodard of Ooltewah and Rev. LeRoy Henderson Jr. of Valdosta, Ga., and she is engaged to Jared Story, son of Jerry and Nancy Story of Jonesborough.

Corinna J. Honeycutt, a senior majoring in English and journalism, is the wife of Brett Honeycutt of Elizabethton. She is Secretary for External Affairs for the ETSU Student Government Association, secretary of the George W. Kelly Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a member of the prestigious Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and attends Sims Hill Christian Church in Elizabethton. Her parents are Dennis Jackson of Butler and Penny Presley of Virginia Beach, Va.

Johnny Krause is the son of Frank and Patty Krause of Crossville. A senior majoring in public relations, he is president of the Preview and Orientation Leader Organization and a member of both the ETSU Chorale and Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity.

Erich Lutz of Tazewell, Va., is a senior majoring in biology. He was accepted into the Honors-in-Discipline Biological Sciences program and received a 2009 Honors College Undergraduate Research Fellowship. An ETSU Student Government Association Senator, he also served as a Preview and orientation leader and was accepted for membership by Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honorary society and Golden Key International Honour Society.

Elizabeth (Beth) Maloney is a senior nursing major and has been the president of the Student Nurses Association for two years. A peer mentor for nursing students, she is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honorary, serving as the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital “Up ’til Dawn” Advocacy chair and public relations chair. The executive vice president of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority, she was named the most outstanding member of the 2006 class and recipient of the Leading Lion award. In addition, she served as scholarship chair and Ronald McDonald House benefit chair. She has also acted as a March of Dimes fundraising volunteer. She is the daughter of Jack and Lin Maloney of Morristown and sister of Erin Maloney of Knoxville.

Nicholas Hayes Mitchell is the president of the ETSU Interfraternity Council and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity. Elected to the ETSU Student Government Association for three years, he was president of the ETSU College Republicans and is a member of the Greene County Republican Party, as well as Main Street: Greeneville. Active with the ETSU Presbyterian Campus Ministry, he is a member of Greeneville’s First Presbyterian Church. He is the son of Rickey and Eileen Mitchell and grandson of Robert and Mary Hill and Clyfene Mitchell, all of Greeneville, as well as the late Walter Mitchell.

Katherine Schiermeyer, daughter of Jim and Lucy Schiermeyer of Tullahoma, is a senior and majoring in mathematics. She is an ETSU Honors Scholar and served as president of the Honors College Student Council. She serves as treasurer of the American Society for Microbiology, public relations chair of the Panhellenic Council, and team chairman for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital “Up ’til Dawn” event. Her other affiliations include membership in Golden Key International Honour Society and the President’s Pride service honorary.
